September 15, 2017
With the need of basic GIS training focusing its application in water resource, CREEW and Cross Momentum Engineers (CME) Pvt. Ltd. jointly conducted 5 days long training program ‘Basic GIS & its Application to Water Resources’ on 10th – 14th September 2017 at ICTC Building, IoE, Pulchowk, Lalitpur following the training announcement made on 13 August 2017.
A total of 14 engineers from the divisional and regional irrigation offices across the country and their head office, Department of Irrigation, Government of Nepal, participated in the training program. The training resource persons were Dr. Vishnu Prasad Pandey, Er. Utsav Bhattarai, Mr. Resham Baniya and Ms. Payaswini Ghimire.
The training program was successful in transferring the knowledge and skill of the resource persons to most of the participating young government engineers and some senior engineers. The training course structure was intensive, with a total of 40 hrs, that included basic understanding of GIS, spatial analysis of vector data, projections and coordinate system transformation, integrating GIS with Google Earth and android based application SW maps, watershed delineation, river network generation, thiessen polygon, precipitation contour mapping, flood inundation mapping, proximity analysis and advanced layout and mapping. The training course also included 2 project sets with demonstration of android based application SW maps.
The invited guest Dr. Rajan Bhattarai, the Senior Divisional Engineer, Department of Irrigation, expressed his gratitude to the organizers and the resource persons. He shared that learning from previous GIS training conducted by CREEW and WMS has already been utilized by the participating engineers in their offices. The 3 representative trainees shared that the training could fulfill their ‘extreme need’ of the GIS training, learn complete about GIS basics and its application in water resources, and also expected advance GIS application training in water resource engineering in future training calls.
The certificates were distributed to the participants and resource persons by the invited guest, Dr. Rajan Bhattarai.
In a closing note of the 5 days long training, Dr. Rabin Malla, Executive Director, CREEW, stressed the importance of acquiring knowledge and hands on skill on application of various engineering tools and techniques and also getting timely update on them for effective work delivery.
